Deb Thompson COLLECTION Studio Tour

Posted On:  December 29, 2008

It’s done! It’s done! It’s done! After 20 years of waiting for my very own sewing space, it’s finally finished!!! OMG, this is the BEST Christmas ever!!! What’s even better is that I have 16 days off of work to enjoy it! Check it out…

We moved into our new house just over a year ago. Even though I was still stuck sewing in an unfinished (cold) basement in this house, it was definitely a bigger space than I’ve had in the past so I was pretty excited and didn’t have much to complain about. But after enduring yet another Calgary winter where the temperature outside dipped down to minus 30 Celsius and it honestly wasn’t that much warmer in the basement, I decided I wanted my own (real) sewing space. A space that was organized, clean, warm, well lit and encouraged creativity. I approached my husband on the issue during the summer and to my surprise he agreed that we should just call a contractor and get the basement developed (instead of taking 2 or 3 years to do it ourselves). So the contractor arrived in early November and after 6 weeks, I have my own sewing ‘studio’! The Deb Thompson Collection Studio! I’m elated!! Let’s go for a tour shall we??

This is how the basement used to look. This is the only picture I could find and it only shows a very small section of the basement, but you get the idea! It had concrete floors and the walls were also concrete but they put some insulation against them. Needless to say, it was cold in the winter time and there was really no place to stick things to the wall (since there were no walls)! I also really didn’t like all the spiders down there - especially the bugger that fell on my chest while I was doing crunches in our home gym and the other guy who fell off the roof and right on to my sewing machine while I was stitching something!!

Basement Before

And….(drumroll please…) here is how it look today! This is the view coming down the stairs into the basement. As you walk into the sewing room, you can see the new cork flooring (great for finding dropped pins and needles!) and the Ikea 4-cube shelf for my patterns. Entering the room

Here is another view of the 4-cube pattern organizer. It works great! I can fit about 65 standard patterns in each box. So far I have 6 boxes full in this 4-cube shelf and another one in my room (you will see in a minute) The cubes

Here is my L-shaped desk with 3 of my 4 machines. I got the middle one (the silver one) from my husband for Christmas. It sews 1200 stitches per minute!! It's the only machine I own that has a speed control adjustment in the presser foot. I'm a bit intimidated by it right now but I'm sure I'll be plugging away at it soon!! L shaped desks

Another view of my desks and one of my dress forms. Oh and my new cabinets with under cabinet lighting!! L shaped desks

Here you can see the other 4-cube cabinet with the rest of my patterns. more patterns

A closer picture of the pattern shelf. more patterns

My 3X6' cutting table. I ordered a 3X6' cutting matt to go on top of it but it hasn't arrived yet. cutting table

And lastly - the change room! I still haven't gotten the mirrors for the 3 walls or the curtain to close for privacy but I'm working on it and will post another picture when all that is complete. change room
