My Mexico Dress - Patrones

Posted On:  January 26, 2010

The Mexico Dress

Hi! Just a quick update to let everyone know what I'm working on these days. Well besides creating a stock of items for my new webstore JOI Gift Boutique and sewing up mountains of samples for my Master Sewing & Design Professional Certification, I have been planning my wardrobe for our family Mexico trip this spring break.

First item on my sewing list is a new dress to wear to dinner. We are staying at the Barcelo Maya Palace and there are 7 or 8 restaraunts so I want to have a nice dress incase we decide to eat at one of the nicer a la carte's. I chose this pattern from a Patrones magazine given to me by a friend and co-worker who frequents Spain & Portugal and is nice enough to send me a copy everytime he or his wife spot one in the magazine stores...Thanks Matt!!! This magazine is from 2008 (I think). Here is a photo of the dress and for the sewers out there, here is line drawing! (I know - I can't visulize without a line drawing).

The thing I found interesting about this design is that even though the skirt appears to be a 'bubble' skirt, it is not. It's actually pleated all the way around the bottom hem. The muslin looks really neat and I can't wait to see it in the stretch satin that I bought! I'm sure it will hang much better than muslin.

Here is a photo of the fabric I bought for this dress. I had a beautiful silvery purple satin in my stash but of course I was about .5M too short! So I went on a hunt to find matching fabric but to no avail. In the end, I settled on this raspberry colored stretch satin fabric. I'm hoping the pleats in the skirt waist & the bottom are going to look divine with this fabric and the way it hangs.

I'm hoping to finish the dress up this weekend at which time I will post a review with any tips or tricks I learned!

Happy Sewing Dear Friends!

Donna Karan & Spring Sewing Inspiration

Posted On:  January 9, 2010

Hello Everyone! I hope you are all back and knee deep into your sewing projects and planning your spring sewing. I thought this post might help inspire some of you!!

I have to tell you that once again I am loving Donna Karan’s newest (spring) collection! I have yet to be disappointed by anything Donna Karan designs. Everything from the lines to the fabric to the colors is always in perfect harmony! If only I had a 6ft 110lb body to be able to wear these things!! Even still, I plan to use some of her spring collection to inspire my creativity this season. A couple of things I’m especially drawn to are:

Her use of two toned, airy fabrics to create these drop dead gorgeous pencil skirts.

This fantastic shade of orange! It’s fresh and fun and yet the soft flowing fabric makes the bright color not seem so harsh.

Donna seems to be drawn to neutral tone combinations and she doesn’t disappoint once again. I too adore the combination of these neutrals. It’s so calming, serene and ultra feminine.

And lastly - not Donna Karan, but a Michael Kors coat that I love and absolutely MUST make!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year Everybody!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas & New Year celebration!! I for one, had a great time!! Now it's 2010 and time once again to make a few sewing resolutions. Because I have a few personal resolutions on my list to focus on, my sewing resolution list seems short the year. Here are the 2 key things I would like to do this year...

1 - Sew/Buy with a plan. Once again, I am going to strive to sew and purchase clothing/accessories with a full outfit in mind. I get caught up (like most sewers) in these one off projects that are fun to do but at the end of the day, I am left with a skirt or top that I have nothing to wear with. I would like to start sewing & purchasing clothing & items that allow me to create at least one fully polished outfit! Stay tuned to see how I do!

2 - Complete one module in the Master Sewing & Design Certificate Program. I've been researching this program and this year I plan to get started. I'm very excited!!

Well, I hope you all have a wonderful, successful, happy, peaceful and fulfilling 2010!

Cheers! Deb
