Okay...(deep breath), so as I was blogging about earlier, I kind of caught sewing ADD and flipped from focusing on the one shoulder strap dress to a Burda dress that I had made a couple years ago. I was all psyched up cause I was finally going to cut into this FABULOUS peice of fabric that I've been saving for just the right moment.
So I tweaked my Burda dress pattern and I have to tell you that the fit is absolutely superb! I cut the dress, sew it up, check the fit (perfect) and am at the final hand stitching stages (tacking down the back facings at the zipper, the front facings and hand hemming) and all of a sudden, not sure what happened here folks but all of a sudden, I decide to take a short cut. The type of short cut I would have done when I was 18 or 20 when I didn't understand the art of sewing to the degree I do now. It's like my brain just had a short in it for a moment and I get this crazy idea that instead of hand tacking down my facings I will use some steam a seam! AND to top off that moment of stupidity, I WON'T test it first on the fabric. So I'm literally 10mins away from having this adorable dress finished and ready to hang up in my closet and I completely ruin it!!
Turns out, Steam a Seam on this particular fabric doesn't work that well. The glue bled right through to the outside and it looks horrible! Here is a photo to show you how bad it looks. I couldn't bear the thought of taking a photo of the full dress to show you , I am just too distressed about the whole disaster right now. I might get my hubby to take a photo of the dress on me later so you all can see the impressiveness of my stupidity. But for now, a snippet is all I can share with you.
So, I called a time out! I sat down, took some deep breaths and reminded myself why I take so much time to cut out muslin after muslin and read through stacks of books on sewing, fabric, fitting, interfacings etc etc. And as I always do when I have a sewing disaster, I decided my punishment would be to regroup by cleaning up my entire sewing room, organizing everything and then pick up some new fabric and start that damn dress again only this time get it right without shortcuts and stupid mistakes!
So I tidied, scrubbed, wiped, vaccumed, reorganized my patterns and lastly, went through and refolded my stacks of muslins. This is where the original issue with ADD kicks back in! During the act of refolding my muslins, I found a muslin for a dress that I made probably 4 years ago and I thought "what the hell, I should try it on - could be a future project" so I try it on and I am instantly in love with the fit. So, you guessed it, I jumped in my car, bought some fabric and started yet ANOTHER new project!! Sometimes I really don't think I've matured in my sewing-self as much as I like to think I have! Stay tuned for the results of this project and maybe one day the Burda dress as well! OH and the one shoulder dress....well I wouldn't hold your breath!
Here is the dress. View B
Here is the fabric. Its a white cotton. After reading this months Lucky Magazine, I was convinced that I need a white dress for summer

So I spend hours sweating over all those adjustments on my recent New Look dress, telling myself that I am going to run out and buy some more fabric to make the dress again in a color that is more complimentary to my skin tone now that the fit is perfected and just like that, I get sidetracked! Honestly some times I feel like that dog in the movie "Up", going along with the conversation and the moment and then all of a sudden "SQUIRREL!" and just like that my head turns in another direction and I've instantly forgotten what was just happening.
So instead of running out and buying my fabric, I was going through my closet and came across a Burda dress that I made a couple years ago. I sewed it without making any adjustments at all and it didn't turn out too bad but with some minor tweaks it could be perfect! So I ran down to my sewing studio and yanked out the pattern and a peice of fabric that I have been in love with and too afraid to cut and decided "okay maybe I will perfect this dress first and then move on to the New Look dress again". So I am going to get started tomorrow on the pattern alterations.
The dress is this one below. It's from the May 2008 Burda Magazine. I omitted the black petersham ribbon across the front and made the straps out of the fabric and not the contrasting ribbon. I am planning to do the same this time around. I will pull out the old dress and get a photo of it and add it to my website when I review the new one

Happy Sewing!
